Natives vs Non-natives

August 3rd, 2009 - Planted by Edith Harbaugh

A frequent request we get from our users is better filtering for native vs non-native trees. A big issue is that a plant that some can consider “native” to California (like Eucalyptus) is actually not a native! I really enjoyed reading this article about the trees of San Francisco none of which are actually native!

I think San Francisco would look very different without any trees.

I love your gardening blog. I found your blog on google and read a few of your other posts. I just added you to my Google News Reader. Keep up the good work. Look forward to reading more from you in the future. Thanks!

If you are willing to water it 2-3 times a week, feed once a month and spend a few days a year pruning and trimming and wiring, then yes they are easy. The reason most people say they are hard to take care of is that they buy a bonsai, but dont bother learning anything about them. Making matters worse, there are many unscrupulous bonsai sellers out there, mainly selling at kiosks in malls, who will sell you an outdoor tree and say it is an indoor tree.
