General Gardening » camellia japonica-'April Snow'
Hello Gretchen, It's good to see that you got a camellia in the 'April' series, as they are one of the most hardy of all Camellias. Normally zone 7 is the max cold hardy zone for Camellia japonica...but 'April Snow' streches into your 6b zone. Even so, I would give the plant some protection by having it planted close to your house. Placing your camellia in a location getting eastern exposure or morning sun is a good idea, as it can burn in the afternoon hot sun. Make sure your planting in soild that is acidic in nature. If not, it will need to be adjusted to give your camellia a chance to be a peak performer in your garden. Best! ~ Ian
Ask the Plant Doctor » Holes in the leaves
Hello Marie, Thanks so much for your inquiry and will love to help you out with your pest issue! The thing that stands out most for me is the fact that the one common pest for all these plants that creates holes in the leaves is snails and or slugs. If the holes are close to a half inch in size or larger I feel confident that this is your pest! Look closely for snail mucus trails on the top of the leaves that would have been left in the evening hours. Just sprinkle some snail / slug bait around the base of your plants and see over the next couple weeks if you notice any new holes being formed. Thanks again Marie Cheers! Ian Hall
