Ah yes..the elusive late winter / early spring bloomer! So obviously you probably live in an area that is not covered in snow this time of year...which is fantastic for your potential options in your garden space! A couple of my favorites for this time of year would be Forsythia x intermedia 'Show Off' http://bit.ly/gAIuyQ and Chaenomeles speciosa (Flowering Quince) http://bit.ly/i8UQ9j for a back of the border plantings. Also a great consideration for warmer areas (zone 9 and higher) is the glorious indigo blue spikes of Mexican sage or Salvia longispicata x farinacea 'Mystic Spires Blue' http://bit.ly/ewgWAi that can really light up the middle of you borders very early in the spring. Keep a look out for my upcoming blog on winter color for many more ideas!
Best!~ Ian
