There has been a lot of recent products that really can assist with this problem for bamboo. The best solution is to start with a clumping varietal of Bamboo which will only spread a couple of inches each year from their non-invasive, dense root structure. Now spreading Bamboo, which I have seen pop up completely on the other side of a 20' concrete patio from the main grove, is a whole different creature! If left to its own devices that patio could be in shambles within a couple of years! If you are looking to have a specific area grow in quick, then Spreading Bamboo is the way to go, but certainly use either a sunken container / pot or you can use a bamboo root barrier to fill in larger areas without having your bamboo escape and wreak havoc! I can say on my grand parents behalf, be VERY careful to avoid invasive bamboo if possible... They've been fighting the stuff for two decades now and just can't kill it, stalemate it maybe, but it is one of those things once it's established, removal becomes a task requiring vigilance.

It's in the yard, and almost impossible to eradicate or control, and we're in Zone 5B. It lives through Buffalo winters!

Yes the spreading type Bamboo is a nightmare to control. It spreads finger thick shoots that are lying in wait all over a yard eventually! Spreading Bamboo is in my four top plants that are the toughest to eradicate... and the worse thing of all is that these have all been planted by us at some point! The countdown..... 4) Bermuda & Crab grass, 3) Pampas Grass- bulldozer anyone?, 2) Algerian Ivy...bye bye fence line and hello rodents!, 1) the ever special spreading bamboo!
