Bonsai Care

I have a bonsai tree - a ficus, I believe. I have been its caretaker for several years. During this time the tree has survived, but I have never felt it has really flourished. I have many questions about its care, but here is a big one. I live in Zone 5. Should I be leaving my tree outside in the winter or taking it in to live in the house? In the summer, should I put the tree out in full sun or keep in on my north-facing porch? Thanks for your thoughts.
Hello Susie, Thanks so much for taking the time to inquire about your little tree. I suspect that it is a ficus tree, as well, based on the popularity of that species being used as a bonsai. One thing about ficus trees is that they are a tropical tree so having it outside in the winter of zone 5 should be almost instant death! I have seen them go into total shock and lose most of their leaves just by being moved from one room to another. They do like filtered light so for the summer months I would consider putting your tree on the north facing porch. Lots of indirect light is great. If it has been outside all this time, you might see marked improvement after having it indoors for a few months.
