Foamflower   Sugar and Spice (Tiarella)

Tiarella 'Sugar & Spice' is the result of extensive breeding efforts at Terra Nova Nurseries and perhaps the best Tiarella ever! The dramatic, lacy leaves are painted with heavily marked dark centers and have a shiny appearance that almost appears to be lacquered. In spring, a profusion of lightly fragrant bottlebrush flowers are displayed for a very long time. The flowers of Tiarella 'Sugar & Spice' are white with a unique pink frosting.

Plant Care
Planting:

Propagate from the seed in spring or when ripe. Sow in containers in a cold frame (for protection and to ensure hardiness).

Plant Growth:

Rhizomatous herbaceous perennial. Needs partial to full shade. Plants clump together and can reach up to 1 1/2 ft. tall. Works best as a groundcover for a woodland garden or shady border. T. cordifolia is fast-spreading.

Blooming:

Inflorescences are borne on narrow, erect stems from spring to summer. Colors can be white or pink.

Soil and Irrigation:

Needs regular water. Plants don't do well with excessive winter moisture. Tolerant of many soil conditions, but does best in cool, humus-rich soil that is kept moist.

Pruning:

T. cordifolia spreads semi-rapidly.

Pests:

Slugs. Tiarella is also susceptible to rust.
